A student qualifies for English honors and AP classes if she meets most of the following criteria:

Current Grade Point Average:
In Current Regents Course: 90 or above
In Current English 10-Honors Course: 90 or above
In Current AP Language or AP Literature Course: 85 or above

Effort, Time Management, and Participation:
Qualifying for honors in this category means that, in her current Regents or Honors Class, a student demonstrates self-motivation, enthusiasm for the subject, good time management skills, strong participation in class, group and individual activities; and respect for the learning environment.

  • Shows self-motivation in school and beyond;
  • Consistently attends class on time;
  • Demonstrates regular enthusiasm for the subject;
  • Periodically uses school resources (The Writing Center, teacher-appointments);
  • Often participates in the class’s whole-class, group, and individual activities;
  • Always submits work on time;
  • Manages constructive criticism;
  • Respects the learning environment;
  • Takes initiative for her own improvement (in, for example, rewriting essays or completing test corrections)

Writing Test Skill:
If a student currently takes a regents class but would like to apply for honors in her following year, she must take a sample writing test (after school) and earn the following scores*.

AP Literature: 6 or above (according to AP Literature rubric)
AP Language: 6 or above (according to AP Language rubric)
English 10H: 26/30 or above (according to Preston’s writing rubric)

*For current honors students, the department automatically considers their work in their current honors class*

Writing Assignment Skill:*

A student who currently takes a regents class but applies for honors her following year must submit one writing sample from this year that shows promise in the ‘Meaning,’ ‘Development,’ ‘Organization,’ ‘Language,’ and ‘Conventions’ qualities appearing on the Preston writing rubric, on page 45 in the school handbook.

A student can choose a previously ungraded piece of writing or completed assignment from a class this year (but must conceal the original grade).

*For current honors students, the department automatically considers their work in their current honors class*

Recommendation: A current English teacher must recommend the applicant.
